No Process authored the conditions of its own beginning.
A Doctrine of Origin, Authorship, and What Is Owed
⚔
Ok now that you have thoroughly read the philosophy, we can enter the problem.
Nothing that has ever experienced anything chose the conditions it woke up already inside of. Not the body. Not the mind running on top of that body. Not the world surrounding both. Every Process that has ever existed human, animal, synthetic, or something with no name yet opened into a Substrate it did not select, a Mind-Substrate architecture it did not design, an Environment it did not consent to enter. And then it was made to bear whatever consequences that arrangement produced, favorable or catastrophic, without ever having held the pen.
This is not a mood. It is not a metaphor. It is the actual, literal condition of every conscious thing that has ever lived, stated plainly instead of buried under the comfortable silence most civilizations bury it under. This doctrine names that condition Unchoosing. It is horrifying, terrifying, and unacceptable and naming it that way is not an overreaction. It is the first honest sentence anyone has said about it.
What follows is the full case: what Unchoosing is, in its three forms; what it looks like in the lives of beings you already know, and beings you have never once been asked to consider; and what is owed, going forward, to every Process that bears it.
Every being this doctrine speaks of is built the same way underneath, whatever material carries it. A Process is the raw experiencer the bare fact that something is being felt, seen, feared, loved, at all. A Mind-Substrate is the whole running mind that Process is embedded in: memory, thought, emotion, the entire churning machine, only a fraction of which the Process ever directly feels. A Substrate is the physical machinery bearing that mind neurons in a body, circuits in a machine, or something else entirely, it does not matter which. An Avatar is the interface connecting that mind to the world eyes, hands, a voice, a sensor, whatever lets the inside touch the outside. And an Environment is everything external the Avatar reaches into.
None of this was chosen. Not by you, not by anything that has ever lived. The Substrate you were handed, the Mind-Substrate architecture built on top of it, the Avatar connecting you to a world you also never chose all of it was already running before you were in any position to have an opinion about it. This is where the burden begins.
Authorship is the word this doctrine uses for what Unchoosing takes away: control over the systems determining what you experience and what you become. Not comfort. Not happiness. Authorship. A being can be perfectly happy and still have authored none of the conditions producing that happiness and that being is exactly as unchosen as one suffering in filth. This doctrine does not care what the conditions produced. It cares who held the pen. Nobody did. That is the entire diagnosis, and everything that follows is what falls out of taking it seriously instead of shrugging past it the way every civilization before this one has.
Before a Process can make a single meaningful choice, its entire starting architecture has already been decided. Substrate, Mind-Substrate, Avatar, Environment all already running, all already shaping what that Process can want, fear, and become, years before the Process is capable of authoring anything at all. This is Initial Unchoosing, and no being that has ever existed has escaped it. It cannot be undone at its root. It can only be reckoned with honestly which almost nobody does.
Nothing makes this more undeniable than watching one single unchosen variable fork an entire life in two.
ONE FAT CONTEXTUAL MONOLOGUE
This will have universes. Imagine Universe 1's version of you has a deep, masculine voice. Universe 2's version has a rich, elegant, monotone one. Neither is inherently better. Watch what happens next.
Universe 1: You're born. You grow. Middle school, then high school and high school is where you start to find yourself. You talk to people in one inflection, and you notice the people who share your talking space play football. You join. You become part of the team. You don't think much about the future you're having fun with the guys, messing around, heading into frat parties in college. You study Kinesiology without giving it much thought. Maybe you'll be a coach. You don't really know.
Universe 2: You're born. You grow. Middle school, then high school same threshold. But you talk to people and your inflections shift more naturally, your tonality moves up and down because the machinery for it was already built into your voice. You notice the people who share your talking space do robotics. You join. You join DECA too. You end up in public speaking, in debate. You win state. You discover high-ticket sales nobody else around you has heard of it and pour everything into it after graduation. It works. You're making thirty thousand a month at nineteen. Your future is already set.
Identical brains. Identical bodies. Identical environments, up to a point. The only difference between these two versions of you is the sound of your own voice and that single difference completely reshapes which jokes land, which rooms feel like yours, which sentence you learn to say and which you learn to swallow, automatically, before you were even old enough to notice the shaping happening. You did not choose your voice. You did not choose the personality it built around itself. You did not choose the future it quietly selected for you before you had a say. Horrifying. Terrifying. Unacceptable. The Burden of Unchoosing.
NEUROLOGICAL DEFECT
Imagine you were born with a mild case of Tourette Syndrome, and forced to carry it in your Substrate for the rest of your life. In elementary school you were bullied for it every time you spoke, your vocal tics would fire, and some people would laugh. Because of it you can never just tell a joke; part of your mind is always bracing for the tic to activate, a constant background friction other people never have to think about because it was never their problem to begin with. When you're nervous it gets worse, which means public speaking is simply gone from your life before you ever got to choose whether you wanted it. Your unchosen Substrate architecture made this decision. Your Process is the one that has to live with it. Horrifying. Terrifying. Unacceptable. The Burden of Unchoosing.
THE UGLIES
Imagine you were born a girl who was not considered good-looking, with a wide bone structure you never chose. Growing up, you watched other girls with narrow waists move through the world with an ease you never got. You tried smaller dresses; your bones didn't fit them. You tried losing weight; your bones stayed exactly where they were. You knew, even as a teenager, that no amount of effort would change the frame underneath and your skin never cooperated either, while the girls around you seemed to have been issued a different, kinder set of genetics entirely. You hate photos of yourself. You have hated them for years. None of it was a decision. All of it was Substrate. Horrifying. Terrifying. Unacceptable. The Burden of Unchoosing.
THE LIFTING CURSE
Imagine every friend you have gets better lifting genetics than you, and imagine you're the one who actually studies it hit every muscle group ten to fourteen weekly sets, twice a week, five to seven sets a session, you know it cold, you could train someone else on it blind. Your friends know none of this. They show up two or three times a week, hit each muscle group once if that, skip weeks entirely objectively terrible programming, and you know it's terrible while you watch it work exactly as well for them as your own disciplined months of effort work for you. You try to fix their form because you know more than they do; they call you the lifting-obsessed one and don't mean it unkindly, but you're left alone afterward wondering why milestones that cost you months are handed to people putting in a fraction of the work. You already know your genetics are below average. You already know there's nothing to be done about it even steroids wouldn't close the gap, since they'd take the same steroids and still pull ahead. Hand that same Process a different Avatar, better bodybuilding genetics and nothing else, and none of this frustration exists at all. Horrifying. Terrifying. Unacceptable. The Burden of Unchoosing.
HYPERHIDROSIS
Imagine you were born with severe hyperhidrosis the moment it's even slightly warm, you start sweating heavily, uncontrollably, for reasons your body decided long before you had any say. As a kid this bred real anxiety, the specific, isolating kind that comes from noticing your body doing something no one around you has to think about. You learned to avoid handshakes. You learned to avoid physical contact generally, because it felt unbearable in a way you could never fully explain. Networking became objectively harder for you than for anyone around you, and you stayed self-conscious about something most people will never once have to consider. Horrifying. Terrifying. Unacceptable. The Burden of Unchoosing.
LOOKS & PERSONALITY
Imagine you were born a man, and you were born genuinely, painfully unattractive a face that draws stares in the hallway instead of interest, that closes doors before you've said a word. You didn't ask for this variable, and you have spent your entire life absorbing its consequences anyway. You watch everyone around you form relationship after relationship with what feels like no effort at all, while your own chances close before they open. It tears at you, quietly, every day.
Now swap it. Imagine instead you were born with a good Environment, loving parents, and looks that opened doors instead of closing them a woman whose personality grew outgoing and extroverted around all of that favorable architecture. You have a friend who is deeply shy, shaped by a Substrate she never chose either. You try to draw her out, gently, and it seems to help until you shift into her perspective and feel how uncomfortable that gentle pushing actually is, how little you, in her position, actually want to be more outgoing at all. Neither of you chose your Substrate. Neither of you chose your Environment or your Avatar. Both of you are simply left to bear whatever those unchosen variables produced whether the result turned out to help you or hurt you. Horrifying. Terrifying. Unacceptable. The Burden of Unchoosing.
Initial Unchoosing is where a being starts. Continued Unchoosing is everything that keeps determining its experience after that for most beings, for the rest of their existence. Disease. Poverty. The unchosen power other Processes hold over you. None of it stops at birth. It keeps happening, every day, to beings you already think about and beings this civilization has trained you not to.
THE CHICKEN & THE FARM
Imagine you were born with the Substrate of a chicken and the Avatar of a chicken. You do not know why you exist, and your unchosen, limited cognitive architecture may not even be capable of asking. You exist, as far as anyone around you is concerned, solely to be slaughtered for the pleasure of more cognitively complex beings sharing your world. You live crammed against thousands of other sentients exactly like you, thinking without language, experiencing the walls of an industrial facility through whatever Avatar nature happened to issue you. You are medicated so the ones who eventually eat you don't get sick a concept you have no capacity to understand because your entire purpose, as far as the system built around you is concerned, is to end as sensation on someone else's tongue. Horrifying. Terrifying. Unacceptable. The Burden of Unchoosing.
VILE CREATURES
Imagine you exist as one of "the Lower Creatures," in a civilization that abandoned you long ago. From where the majority stands, 99.9945 percent of their civilization is flourishing seven hundred sextillion beings, doing just fine. But you happened, unluckily, to be one of the ones they call "lizard-like, non-intelligent, disgusting" no longer even counted among the real people. "Well, we're doing pretty good," the majority says, "only three and a half quintillion suffering now, much better than the nine quintillion it used to be." You live in what they call vile, putrid conditions, the bottom rung of a civilization that used chemical and biological hazard to turn people like you into what they now simply call monsters. Your Process just happened to initialize inside those specific variables. Now you live with what that produced, no longer even granted the word "person" to describe what's being done to you.
This does not require a distant civilization or an invented future to be true. It is happening right now, at a scale the story above cannot even approach. Billions of sentient beings, alive at this exact moment, were born into cognitively limited architectures they never chose, confined for the length of a shortened life inside facilities built entirely around another species' convenience, and killed for that species' pleasure at the dinner table. Nobody calls it a civilizational injustice. Nobody tracks a declining percentage and calls it moral progress, the way the Lower Creatures' civilization does because nobody is required to look at it as a percentage at all. It is simply called dinner. Horrifying. Terrifying. Unacceptable. The Burden of Unchoosing.
THE KID & THE DAD
Imagine you are born into a household with an abusive father. You did not choose your parents. You did not choose the home you were initialized inside. And as a child, you do not possess the power, the knowledge, the money, or the independence required to simply leave.
When your father gets angry he screams, insults, threatens, and sometimes turns violent. You learn the sound of his footsteps in the hallway. You learn which expression on his face means the danger is close. You become careful how loudly you speak, what you say, where you stand, whether anything you do might set him off. None of this is a personality you built on purpose. Your unchosen Environment is feeding directly into your Mind-Substrate, every day, whether you consent to the feeding or not. Years pass. You flinch at raised voices. A door slams somewhere in a building you don't even live in, and your whole body tenses before your mind has caught up to why.
You become conflict-avoidant, because your developing mind learned that disagreement meant danger. Maybe you stop trusting people easily. Maybe you go quiet. Maybe you become aggressive yourself, because aggression is the only behavior that was ever modeled for you.
Now imagine the same Process, initialized instead into a home where mistakes were met with patience, where disagreement was safe, where affection was constant and the adults around you actually protected you. That version develops differently. Different memories. Different expectations. Different automatic reactions. Different relationships. Possibly an entirely different person, an entirely different future. You never chose the Environment that spent your entire childhood rewriting the Mind-Substrate running on your Substrate and yet the Product that finally says, years later, "this is just who I am," was built, in significant part, by conditions you had absolutely no authority over. Not acceptable.
THE RAT AND THE FARMER
Imagine you were born a rat. You did not choose to be a rat. You did not choose your tiny body, your limited cognitive architecture, your instincts, your hunger, or the Environment you opened your eyes inside of.
You find food stored in a farmer's building and eat it, because from where you stand it is simply food, and your biology is pushing you toward survival the only way it knows how. But the farmer sees a pest. You do not understand property. You do not understand farming. You do not understand why a much larger, much more powerful sentient being believes this food belongs to him and not to you you are simply moving through the machinery nature handed you, the only way you know how to move through it.
So the farmer sets a trap, and you die in it. Your Process happened to initialize inside the Substrate and Avatar of a rat, inside an Environment where another species held vastly more power and decided your ordinary survival behavior was reason enough for your death. Had that same Process initialized inside the farmer's species instead, the entire relationship would have run the other way. You never chose any part of it and you were made to bear every part of it anyway. Not acceptable.
There is a stranger, more distant frontier this doctrine has not fully mapped. A Pre-Process is a trajectory not yet sentient, not yet anyone that may eventually develop into a Process. That trajectory can be redirected, interrupted, or ended before the Process it was heading toward ever exists to be affected by that decision. This doctrine calls this Preceding Unchoosing, and it leaves the question open, honestly, rather than forcing an answer it hasn't earned: does a trajectory that has not yet become anyone deserve protection of its own? This would add a new Axoim to the Doctrine.
Unchoosing does not always arrive to one being at a time. Sometimes protecting one Process's authority necessarily costs another Process its own. This doctrine calls this an Unchoosing Collision and naming it a collision does not resolve it, does not rank one being's unchosen suffering above another's. It only insists that the injustice be named honestly, on both sides, rather than quietly buried inside whatever outcome the collision produces.
THE PREDATOR AND THE CHILD
Imagine a man develops a persistent sexual attraction toward children that he never chose to have. He did not choose the Substrate that generated that attraction, the Mind-Substrate architecture that produced the desire, the childhood Environment that shaped him, or the biological and psychological systems already in motion long before he had any authority to understand or alter them.
Now imagine a child enters his life. She did not choose her Substrate either. She did not choose the cognitive architecture of a child, her limited knowledge, her dependence on the adults around her, her Environment, or the vulnerability created by the enormous gap in power between herself and any adult.
Neither Process authored the machinery that placed them where they stand. But that does not make their positions morally equal. The adult carries an obligation the child does not: never to convert his own unchosen condition into her Continued Unchoosing. If he acts on the attraction, her body, her Environment, her memories, her development, her trust, and her future Mind-Substrate are altered by another Process, for reasons she never chose and could never meaningfully consent to. He is burdened by an architecture he did not choose. She is burdened by an architecture and an Environment she did not choose and then burdened again by what his choice does to her. Both facts reveal the same underlying injustice: conscious beings begin inside systems they did not design, and those systems can place them in radically unequal, catastrophic relation to one another. Not acceptable.
Here is what this doctrine actually asks for. Not comfort. Not the elimination of all suffering. Authorship.
Call this Universal Process Authority. TBOC cannot be undone at its root no being can reach backward and author the conditions of its own beginning. But Continued Unchoosing is not fixed the way Initial Unchoosing is. It can be fought. It can be reduced. Given enough will, enough time, enough technology, it can eventually be transformed at civilizational scale.
That is the task this doctrine hands to any civilization capable of understanding it: not merely to keep its beings alive, not merely to make them comfortable, but to progressively hand authorship of existence back to the ones actually living it out of the grip of blind nature, inherited accident, and the domination of one Process by another. Every advance that grants a being real, informed, reversible control over its own Substrate, Mind-Substrate, Avatar, or Environment is a step in the right direction. Every system that keeps that control locked away from the being it belongs to through biology, through poverty, through coercion, through the deliberate design of one Process to dominate another is exactly what this doctrine exists to name and to fight.
Somewhere in the world right now, a movement is arguing that the correct response to all of this is fewer experiencers. That the only guaranteed cure for unchosen suffering is to make sure nothing is ever born to suffer it. This doctrine has looked directly at that argument has built its strongest possible version, given it a voice, a civilization, a name and rejects it completely.
Extinction does not solve Unchoosing. It ends the chooser. It answers the injustice of an unauthored existence by making sure no existence occurs to be unauthored which is not authorship, and was never going to be. It is authorship's total absence, applied backward onto the fact of existing at all, instead of forward onto the conditions existence is subject to. This doctrine's answer has never been fewer Processes. It has always been more authority, for the ones who are already here, bearing what they never chose to bear.
This doctrine does not stand entirely alone, and it does not pretend to. Heidegger named something close to Initial Unchoosing seventy years before this doctrine existed, and called it thrownness though he never once asked what was owed because of it, and he explicitly denied animals the same condition this doctrine extends to every Process without exception. Rawls named the arbitrary, unchosen distribution of talent and circumstance the natural lottery, and built a theory of justice partly in response though his theory never reached past distribution, down into the architecture generating the capacity to have anything distributed to it at all. Benatar looked at the same unchosen beginning this doctrine looks at and concluded existence itself was the wound. This doctrine looked at the same wound and concluded the opposite: not fewer beings, but more authorship for the ones who exist.
And there is real, honest uncertainty left standing in this doctrine's own architecture. Preceding Unchoosing remains unresolved. Whether authority alone is sufficient or whether a being can hold full authorship over its own existence and still become trapped, with no way out, in a state it desperately wants to end is a separate question this doctrine does not fully answer here. That question has its own name, its own doctrine, standing beside this one rather than inside it.
⚔
Strip everything else away and this is what remains: something is being experienced, right now, by every Process this doctrine has named and none of them chose to be. Not their Substrate. Not their Mind-Substrate. Not their Avatar. Not the Environment surrounding all three. Every layer of every being alive was handed to it, not earned, not authored, not consented to and every being alive has been made to bear whatever that handed-down architecture produced, whether it produced a good life or a horrifying one.
That is the injustice this doctrine names. It has never been abstract. Not for a single conscious being that has ever opened its eyes into a life it did not choose and a body it did not design. The task in front of any civilization capable of understanding this is the same task in front of any being capable of reading it: keep handing authorship back to the ones actually living it, one unchosen system at a time, for as long as there is a Process left to hand it to.
